Medical and Biotech

The medical and life sciences sector is a capital-intensive, highly-technical, and highly-skilled industry in Lincoln. Home to three full-service medical centers, a hospital specializing in heart surgery, and a premier rehabilitation hospital specializing in stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, Lincoln’s medical sector is thriving. The Lincoln heath care system also provides a 24-hour information and service line; an extended-hour illness and injury clinic; eight nursing homes and several in-home-care agencies; and a community blood bank. In addition to Lincoln’s exceptional medical services, the community is one of the healthiest in the nation. In 2011, Men’s Health Magazine ranked Lincoln as the #3 Healthiest Cities in the United States.

Steming from the medical industry is biotechnology. Due to Lincoln’s low cost of business, exceptional amenities and educated workforce, over 15 biotech companies now reside here. Lincoln’s biotech sector also benefits from the vast array of research, educational programs and business incubators that the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan, Union College, Concordia University and Doane College provide. Recently, the colleges and universities in Lincoln graduated nearly 600 students with a bachelor’s degree in majors related to this sector, another 63 with associate’s degrees and over 120 with post-graduate degrees.

Lincoln biotech businesses also benefit from the research and industry services that the University of Nebraska-Lincoln produces. UNL’s extensive life sciences infrastructure includes the UNL Center for Biotechnology, which fabricates leading research on genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. Furthermore, the University of Nebraska Technology Park (NUTP) acts as a business incubator and has nurtured a number of successful start-up biotech companies including GeneSeek Inc., Nature Technology Inc., and LNKchemosolutions, Inc.
